Field Notes

I have to admit – I have a love / hate relationship with photographing sandhill cranes in flight. On one hand, I love getting cool on-the-wing photos like the one above, but on the other hand – WOW – a single morning of good shooting can produce 700+ photos to sort through!

This particular image was captured one amazingly brisk morning in Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge - truly an incredible place. Located in central(ish) New Mexico, it’s an outstanding sanctuary for dozens – if not hundreds – of different birds and mammals. Sandhills love to stop by and winter here, so I thought it would only be polite to drop by and say hello since I was (sort of) in the area.

Most of the Sandhills were content skimming along the pond and slowly gaining altitude - away from the camera. This guy, however, was one of the few determined birds to get up and outta there as fast as possible. Worked out great for me – it allowed a background showcasing some of the rugged mountains that surround the area.

As hard as it is to get the shot it was well worth it.

Im in florida and I have a flock of sandhill cranes that have adopted me. They have no use for my hubby if he appears on back porch they will scream at him, lol but I go out and feed then cracked corn and they love soft wheat bread.. but when they take flight they are so beatuiful to watch. even better when they do there love dances.
