Lake Superior September Trip – Part 1
March 20, 2012
I know, I know, I’m behind to the point of embarrassment. However, I finally dug up the iPhone videos I shot on my trip last September to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s UP – and I hope you’ll agree it was worth the wait!
Now, if you click the photos below, you’ll be taken to a page that does a decent job of detailing what happened during the actual shoot, so we’ll forgo repeating it all here and keep this post on the short side. Besides, the video really tells the story anyway ![]()
BTW – The video below was shot with my iPhone4G. It’s not the best video camera in the world, but my regular video camera is just too bulky to squeeze in the pack. Well, unless I forgo the whole eating thing, but since I’m a pretty big fan of a full stomach, I opted for the iPhone. So, please excuse the quality, but check out the waves!
(PS – Please forgive the really bad audio at the end – the phone was in my pocket when the wave hit and got pretty wet)
This photo was the result of going out that morning and pretty much sums up what I saw. It was taken about a half an hour before the video was taken – hey, I’m not going to shoot video when the light looks like this:
And yes, I did hit the trail with a backpack later that day. Funny, it started off sunny and warm but as I drew closer to the lake I was tagged first with showers, then sleet, and finally rapidly dropping temps. Still, it all worked out in the end. Mosquito Beach yielded this shot:
Again, click the photos for a more detailed account of what happened. I was pretty excited to get two keepers in one day!
Oh, and if you think this was an intense day, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Just wait till you check out the “Day 2″ hike from Mosquito to Chapel – good stuff….
Thanks for stopping by -oh and you can read part 2 here.

Love your ability to get the grains in the sand pictures. I love how nature weathers and wears away with such a variety of pictures.
I would love to go on one of these trip’s I have always loved your style, thanks for taking the trip. Love all you do. Love, Lenett
I have never seen the Great Lakes but I sure have seen the Atlantic look like that with the huge waves. Wonderul video of them. You are a fantastic photographer. Keep up the good work.
GloriaSteve, the photos are magnificent! You’ve been blessed to be an amazing photographer. I’ve never seen lakes being as wild as Lake Michigan, nor the oceans being that wild, but I have felt the winds buffeting against structures at 70 mph. Keep up the awesome work and be well!
JoanLove those photos.I have Superior Fury on my desktop and it is marvellous. Many thanks for all your news and photos. Those trips sound like a lot of fun.
I spent four years on the ocean (US Navy) and I remember seeing a wave come DOWN from 125 feet above me in a typhoon off the coast of Taipei, Taiwan in 1956. Fortunately I was aboard a 735 foot long heavy cruiser — which shuddered and shook like crazy, but resurfaced almost immediately, only to dive under the next challenging wall of water…and the next…and the next… Pretty intense stuff!
Thanks for weathering the storm for us all — the photos are spectacular!!
Those are so pretty.
I have been all around Lk, Superior. I live near there. I truly enjoy going back there again with you, Pictured rocks are spectacular. I took a boat trip to them and have never forgotten that one. Love your photos. Keep them coming from your travels, and many thanks for sharing them.

Steve,
Thanks for allowing us to share in your adventures. I really wish I was smart enough to capture some of the places I was fortunate enough to go to during the 24 years I served in the US Navy Submarine Service. Have you even been to the North Pole? I went in 1986 and it was intense to say the least. You do have a gifted eye. I totaly am in awe of some of your shots. You are one of my truly favorite photographers. Stay well and thanks again.
